Edgar Allan Poe Dark Poetry contest.png

Light up the Dark. Share your dark poetry. Shadows. Fears. Rising up from the ashes. What is shared in the dark, brings truth to light.

The Winners, finalists and Honourable mentions of our ‘Dark Poetry Contest’ will be promoted on our social media platform and their work will be published in both hardcover and eBook. Our books include a small biographical statement about each poet along with their poem. Winning and commended poems will also be published in the competition’s anthology.

Theme: Dark poetry

Though poetry can be full of light, it also has the ability to capture sorrow, pain, and the fragility of life. In the best cases, these dark poems act as catharsis for both the writer and the reader alike. These pieces act to verbalize the shattered mirror through which we occasionally view the world. Submissions do not have to be similar to the poems by Edgar Allan Poe but we recommend reading some of his work to get inspiration for this contest. Maybe it’s time to share your dark poetry with the world.

Judging criteria:

Relevance to the theme – 50%

Creativity/Style and Originality – 30%

Coherence of form and structure (harmony of words, presentation) – 10%

Clarity of imagery and language – 10% => TOTAL – 100%

“Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.”

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was a visionary of ages, with beautiful, haunting and exemplary works of the potential of one’s darkness. With his work on short stories and poems that touch on the mesmerising topics of death, the natural and the supernatural, he cemented himself as a legend in literature. He was a connoisseur of short stories and brought revolutionary contributions to poetry and literary criticism. We, at Wingless Dreamer, wanted to invite aspiring writers who could channel into their darkness, their emotions, and fears; reach into the depths of their minds and bring out pieces of art, in a worthy attempt to commemorate the undying legend of Edgar Allan Poe. In that sense, we congratulate everyone for their hand in a literary celebration of Edgar’s contributions.

We are so glad to receive so many wonderful poems in our Edgar Allan Poe Dark Poetry Contest this year. Our editorial team was working day and night to find the best dark poem that truly reflects Edgar’s work. However, a select few showed us how they could too, in fact, reach greatness, from the daunting depths of darkness. With spine-chilling sensations, vivid imagery reminiscent of Edgar and a subliminally provoking piece of art, our winner showed us how they could best channel their inner Edgar Allan Poe. Finally, after an intense discussion, we have come to a conclusion. We have with ourselves a gothic genius who dared to step into the shadows of the phantom of Poe!
